Jules Verwest (1883-1957) was a Belgian artist from Ghent. Known as a painter, crayon painter and xylograph, he attended the Ghent Academy. His work includes a range of landscapes, nudes, figures, portraits and still lifes. Verwest travelled extensively to Italy and it is during one of these trips that he painted this excquisite, jewel-like view of Venice. The bright southern sun illuminates this canal, the dappled surface of the water a bold green and blue, contrasting with the warm facades and the gondola appearing under a bridge.
