Angèle BIET, Still life with jugs
oil on board, with slight losses
H 47 x W 57 cm
Angèle Biet (1904-1985) was an artist based in the Calvados town of Lisieux, in Northern France. Her life spanned a good deal of the 20th century and the influences of the major movements of the century - Expressionism, Cubism and Impressionism - are visible in her work.
Of the three works presented by us, this is perhaps the earliest as it presents a more naive quality, and was executed on a Van Eyck board particularly common in the 1950s. The simplicity of the composition is beautifully balanced by a strong contrast of colours between two tones of bright blue, and two tones of deep yellow. Angèle Biet was an artist with a real capacity to underline, through colour, a perfect harmony in her still lives.
