French or Belgian School, 1930s
Charcoal and white chalk on paper
Unindentified signture, lower left: 'MINE VAN ....'
A beautiful portrait of a man on paper, which we date stylistically to the 1930s. The work is signed, although the signature has not allowed us to identify an artist.
The sitter, a beautiful young man of African origin, is depicted looking into the distance towards the left. His delicate head and neck are highlighted in white chalk. His expression is serene, even dreamy. This work could be an academic or studio study of a model. African models was very popular in Paris in the 1930s, which supports the dating of the work.
